Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, says he was wrong to ignore marijuana's medical potential when he wrote an opinion piece in 2009 called "<a href="http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1552034,00.html" nodeindex="429" rel="nofollow" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Why I would Vote No on Pot</a>."</div>
<div dir="ltr" nodeindex="122" style="color: #222222; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
Gupta filmed a <a href="http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/bestoftv/2013/08/05/gupta-weed-promo.cnn.html" nodeindex="430" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;">documentary</a> that aired on CNN on Sunday, August 11, and earlier this week wrote an <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/08/health/gupta-changed-mind-marijuana/index.html" nodeindex="431" rel="nofollow" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">editorial</a> <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/08/health/gupta-changed-mind-marijuana/index.html" nodeindex="432" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;">on</a> <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/08/health/gupta-changed-mind-marijuana/index.html" nodeindex="433" rel="nofollow" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">CNN.com</a> in which he admitted that the research for the movie changed his mind about the drug and its medicinal effects.</div>
<div dir="ltr" nodeindex="123" style="color: #222222; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
After traveling the world, meeting with medical experts and medical marijuana patients, Gupta concludes "we have been <span nodeindex="434" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years</span> in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that."</div>
<div dir="ltr" nodeindex="124" style="color: #222222; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
Here are Gupta's reasons for his change of stance:</div>
<div dir="ltr" nodeindex="125" style="color: #222222; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
Marijuana laws are <span nodeindex="435" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">not based on science</span>. Gupta wrote: "Not because of sound science, but because of its absence, marijuana was classified as a schedule 1 substance" at the urging of Assistant Secretary of Health, Roger Egeberg in 1970.Gupta notes that marijuana <span nodeindex="436" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">doesn't have a "high potential for abuse"</span> and it doesn't lead people to use other drugs. "We now know that while estimates vary, marijuana leads to dependence in around 9 to 10% of its adult users." Cocaine, classified as a (less addictive) schedule 2 substance, hooks 20% of those who use it. Around 25% of heroin users and 30% of tobacco users become addicted.In <span nodeindex="437" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">some medical cases, marijuana is "the only thing that works."</span> Gupta met with one woman in Colorado who used marijuana to cut the number of seizures she had from 300-per-week to two or three per month.It's safer than a lot of prescription drugs: Someone dies from a prescription drug overdose every 19 minutes in the United States, but Gupta could not find a single person who died from a marijuana overdose.Other doctors believe in it: <span nodeindex="438" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">Seventy-six percent of physicians surveyed would prescribe marijuana</span> to ease the pain of women suffering from breast cancer.While quitting marijuana can produce some withdrawal symptoms, like insomnia, anxiety and nausea, it is still <span nodeindex="439" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">nowhere near as bad at drugs like heroin or cocaine, or even booze</span>. "I have seen the withdrawal from alcohol, and it can be life threatening," Gupta said. Not so with marijuana.Medicinal plants (including marijuana specifically) aren't a new idea: The medical and scientific communities have been <span nodeindex="440" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">studying medical marijuana since the 19th Century</span>, and marijuana was actually used to treat neuropathic pain until 1943.Only <span nodeindex="441" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;">6% of research on marijuana published in the last year analyzed benefits</span>. The other 93% are designed primarily to investigate harm. "That imbalance paints a highly distorted picture," Gupta said.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/difficulty-of-study-medical-marijuana-2013-8" nodeindex="442" rel="nofollow" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">The</a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/difficulty-of-study-medical-marijuana-2013-8" nodeindex="443" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;"> </a><span nodeindex="444" style="font-weight: 700; line-height: inherit;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/difficulty-of-study-medical-marijuana-2013-8" nodeindex="445" rel="nofollow" style="color: #1c2dc1; cursor: pointer; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">system is biased against research</a></span> into medical marijuana's benefits. First, you have to get the marijuana for your study from one government-approved farm, and you have to get approval from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which is tasked with studying and preventing drug abuse, not the medical benefits of drugs.</div>
<div dir="ltr" nodeindex="126" style="color: #222222; direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">
In general, Gupta says he listened a bit too closely to medical marijuana opponents and skeptics, and he "didn't look hard enough, until now. I didn't look far enough. I didn't review papers from smaller labs in other countries doing some remarkable research, and I was too dismissive of the loud chorus of legitimate patients whose symptoms improved on cannabis."</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">A £4 million cannabis ‘factory’ thought to be the second largest ever uncovered in Leicestershire was raided this morning.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Officers discoverd approximately 3,000 plants inside the building on an industrial estate in Gilmorton Road, Lutterworth.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Police believe the plants could have yielded cannabis worth approximately £4 million a year if the operation had not been stopped.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">The plants were growing in a number of rooms inside the building, which was kitted out with a complex cultivation and ventilation system.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Three men, aged 24, 33 and 46, have been arrested and remained in police custody this afternoon.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Sgt Ed Des-Chanelle, of Leicestershire Police county local intelligence unit, said: “This is potentially one of the largest finds of cannabis in Leicestershire.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“Leicestershire Police along with other agencies will continue to crack down on the misuse of drugs and rid the streets of these harmful substances.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">“Today’s successful result has stopped an estimated £4million of cannabis hitting the streets of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and has stopped £4million lining the pockets of organised criminals.”</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 20px;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">A rise in the number of cannabis farms in London is to blame for a spate of house fires across the capital, according to figures.</span></span><br />
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">According to the London Fire Brigade, there was a fire at a house used to produce cannabis on average once a fortnight in 2012, more than double the number from 2010.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Police say they have also closed down more than 440 cannabis factories across London since September 2012, including one raid of a farm in Bromley on 21 November.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Fire officers said the lighting and heating equipment to grow the plants are the main reasons for the blazes at the farms.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Police and the London Fire Brigade are now asking members of the public to be on the lookout for any signs there might be a potentially dangerous cannabis factory in their area.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">The Fire Service said to be aware of key signs, such as a sickly-sweet smell, constant intense lighting at the property, covered windows or windows with high levels of condensation.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">London Fire Brigade Third Officer Dave Brown said: "They're often in top floors or lofts which means when a fire takes hold it spreads, destroying roofs and damaging neighbouring buildings."</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Detective Chief Superintendent Carl Bussey, who leads Operation Hawk to tackle drug-related crime, added: <span style="border: 0px none; list-style: none; margin: 0px; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">"Cannabis cultivation and drug dealing damage communities and generate organised and violent crime, money laundering and anti-social behaviour."</span></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">The problem of cannabis farms catching fire is also occurring across the country. This month, firefighters were called to an address in Smethwick in Birmingham following reports of a fire.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Police initially thought a firework was responsible for the fire, but officers then discovered a cannabis factory inside and believed that to be the true cause.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px none; line-height: 20px !important; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 1em; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">A family of five in Burnley, Lancashire described how they were left homeless after a fire broke out at the cannabis factory in a house next door, which eventually ripped through to their own home in October.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Kathleen Chippi talks about her beliefs and the idea of cannibus as
sacrament. Chippi is the founder of Closer to the Heart Ministries in
Nederland, Colo., which will hold its first service July 1, 2010.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span id="Global_Site"><span id="MNGiSection"></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The first time Roger Christie smoked pot, he got high, in more ways than one. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"It fed me spiritually in a way I didn't even know I needed," he said. "I felt whole and complete."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The
Steamboat Springs native went on to found The Hawaii Cannabis (THC)
Ministry, a church where marijuana is the sacrament, 10 years ago in
Hilo and has since been spreading the ganja gospel around the country --
and now around Colorado. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">An effort last year to establish a
Cannabis Ministry branch in Boulder didn't pan out, but now longtime
marijuana activist and Nederland dispensary owner Kathleen Chippi has
been ordained as a minister in the church and plans to open Closer to
the Heart Ministries in the mountain town sometime next month. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">New
state regulations have left many medical marijuana dispensaries with an
uncertain future, and doctors who recommend marijuana are under
increased scrutiny. Frustrated by these developments, some activists are
turning to the as-yet-untested idea that marijuana use is protected
under the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom. They hope
that will provide a way for more people to use cannabis without
government interference. </span><br />

</tbody></table>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">On Saturday, Christie and Chippi will
join other ministers, activists and lawyers in Nederland for a
conference, sponsored by the Boulder-based Cannabis Therapy Institute,
on religious marijuana use. On Sunday, there will be a ministry training
session for those who feel the call. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Chippi, a lapsed Catholic,
said she feels she has been a cannabis minister for years, but she
didn't realize it until she met Christie. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"People use cannabis to
bring them closer to their god or their spirit," she said. "It's
something I've followed for years, but I called myself an activist." </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Christie
points to numerous references to cannabis in the Bible (it's the plant
often translated as "fragrant cane" and was an ingredient in holy
anointing oil), and its use in other religious traditions. He also sees a
possible allusion in the story of God speaking to Moses from a burning
bush. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"Moses met God not in his parents, not in the sun and moon,
but in the smoke and heat of a burning plant," he said. "Was it the
same plant? We'll never know, but because it has been replicated for so
many people, I believe there is some evidence." </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Chippi plans to
keep running her dispensary in addition to the new ministry. Some
medical marijuana patients aren't interested in the spiritual aspects of
cannabis use, and some users who see a spiritual benefit don't qualify
as medical marijuana patients. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">But Chippi is "not pleased" with the new regulations on medical marijuana. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"It
started out as compassionate health care, but it turned into the
Department of Revenue and creating new criminals," she said. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Pursuing the ministry, however, is not the easy way out, she said. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"I
have three attorneys," she said. "One of them feels it's a great case,
and I'll win it. Another one thinks it's a great case, and I'll probably
do jail time. The third one thinks it's a bad idea. Does my husband
want me to do it? No. Do I value freedom? More than anything." </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Denver
attorney Robert Corry, who will be a speaker at the conference, says
the case law on religious use of cannabis in Colorado is just starting
to be written. He's representing a client in Clear Creek County who was
found guilty of possession, despite being a longtime believer in the
spiritual use of cannabis. Corry plans to appeal the verdict. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Jeff
Gard, a Boulder attorney who specializes in marijuana issues and is not
connected with the conference, said religious belief is not a trump
card that protects practitioners from prosecution. Courts have
consistently upheld polygamy convictions, for example. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"Regardless
of how it works out, you'd still have to go through the process of
prosecution," he said of anyone looking to test state or federal law.
"You will be fighting your way out from the inside, potentially from
behind bars." </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Chippi also wants potential disciples to know that participating in cannabis ministry requires more than a desire to get high. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"If you're not sincere, you can't be a church member," Chippi said. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Evidence of that sincerity comes from a willingness to be tutored in the theology and history of religious cannabis use. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"If
you get arrested, your beliefs might questioned," she said. "You need
to be able to respond, and your answer can't be 'getting high.'" </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The
Cannabis Ministry does have a catechism: "God, that's great! Please
show me the blessings in this situation and hurry! We are safe, we are
loved and all is well." </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Christie, the church's founder, said that mantra has even shown him the blessing in marijuana prohibition. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"It's given me meaningful work in life," he said. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Carl Sagan, a titan of scientific study and communication, died in 1996, leaving behind an expansive legacy of research and education. He assumed a diverse set of roles throughout his life, including as a longtime casual user of and advocate for marijuana.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sagan's involvement with pot began as a secret, when he penned an essay in 1969, at the age of 35, under the pseudonym "Mr. X." <a href="http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=56bae19399997e47ab410dba99e01ff4&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2F2013%2F05%2F31%2Fcarl-sagan-marijuana_n_3367112.html&v=1&libId=e42a8841-9fe1-4705-beec-2cfa8617ace8&out=http%3A%2F%2Fmarijuana-uses.com%2Fmr-x%2F&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blogger.com%2Fblogger.g%3FblogID%3D8166478173493899168&title=Carl%20Sagan%2C%20Marijuana%20Advocate%2C%20Explains%20What%20It's%20Like%20To%20Be%20High%20While%20Carl%20Sagan&txt=The%20piece&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13813547602356" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The piece</a>, in which Sagan described the benefits he felt from using marijuana, later appeared in Dr. Lester Grinspoon's 1971 book, "Marihuana Reconsidered." Sagan's identity as the author <a href="http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=56bae19399997e47ab410dba99e01ff4&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2F2013%2F05%2F31%2Fcarl-sagan-marijuana_n_3367112.html&v=1&libId=e42a8841-9fe1-4705-beec-2cfa8617ace8&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.openculture.com%2F2013%2F05%2Fcarl_sagan_extols_the_virtues_of_cannabis_1969.html&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blogger.com%2Fblogger.g%3FblogID%3D8166478173493899168&title=Carl%20Sagan%2C%20Marijuana%20Advocate%2C%20Explains%20What%20It's%20Like%20To%20Be%20High%20While%20Carl%20Sagan&txt=wasn't%20publicly%20disclosed&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13813548209227" target="_blank">wasn't publicly disclosed until 1999</a>, when Keay Davidson published "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471395366/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0471395366&linkCode=as2&tag=alufsi-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Carl Sagan: A Life</a>," which documented Sagan's writings as his alter-ego, "Mr. X."</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Writing that he'd begun smoking intermittently around 10 years before, Sagan noted that marijuana "amplifies torpid sensibilities and produces what to me are even more interesting effects."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"The cannabis experience has greatly improved my appreciation for art, a subject which I had never much appreciated before," he wrote. "The understanding of the intent of the artist which I can achieve when high sometimes carries over to when I’m down. This is one of many human frontiers which cannabis has helped me traverse."</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sagan went on to explain in intricate detail how his experiences listening to music, eating food and even having sex were all heightened while high.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nCRAdz_Qu4M/UlXKWizGfNI/AAAAAAAAHmY/RitIllQ2DFM/s1600/G56fA17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="372" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nCRAdz_Qu4M/UlXKWizGfNI/AAAAAAAAHmY/RitIllQ2DFM/s640/G56fA17.jpg" width="640" /></a><span style="font-size: large;"></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">His essay also included some classic Saganesque poetry:</span><br />
<br />
<blockquote style="background-color: #f0f0f0; border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin: 15px 0px; padding: 15px;">
I can remember one occasion, taking a shower with my wife while high, in which I had an idea on the origins and invalidities of racism in terms of gaussian distribution curves. It was a point obvious in a way, but rarely talked about. I drew the curves in soap on the shower wall, and went to write the idea down. One idea led to another, and at the end of about an hour of extremely hard work I found I had written eleven short essays on a wide range of social, political, philosophical, and human biological topics. Because of problems of space, I can’t go into the details of these essays, but from all external signs, such as public reactions and expert commentary, they seem to contain valid insights. I have used them in university commencement addresses, public lectures, and in my books.</blockquote>
<span style="font-size: large;">Sagan ultimately concluded that it was easy to use marijuana in moderation. For that reason he wrote that "the illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world."</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i><a href="http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=56bae19399997e47ab410dba99e01ff4&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.huffingtonpost.com%2F2013%2F05%2F31%2Fcarl-sagan-marijuana_n_3367112.html&v=1&libId=e42a8841-9fe1-4705-beec-2cfa8617ace8&out=http%3A%2F%2Fmarijuana-uses.com%2Fmr-x%2F&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blogger.com%2Fblogger.g%3FblogID%3D8166478173493899168&title=Carl%20Sagan%2C%20Marijuana%20Advocate%2C%20Explains%20What%20It's%20Like%20To%20Be%20High%20While%20Carl%20Sagan&txt=(Read%20Sagan's%20entire%20essay%20here.)&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_138135510488311" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">(Read Sagan's entire essay here.)</a></i></b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Years later, Sagan became more outspoken about his advocacy, arguing that medical marijuana should be legal for cancer and AIDS patients.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">"Is it rational to forbid patients who are dying from taking marijuana as a palliative to permit them to gain body weight and to get some food down," Sagan asked in an interview. "It seems madness to say, 'We're worried that they're going to become addicted to marijuana' -- there's no evidence whatever that it's an addictive drug, but even if it were, these people are dying, what are we saving them from?"</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Against the steady hum of an extractor fan, the handheld video camera
pans over a small forest of green plants. The unmistakable serrated
leaves of cannabis flutter as gentle gusts of warm air from a heating
unit waft over them.</span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="body ">
<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><span style="font-size: large;">The man who uploaded the video on to YouTube can barely
contain his excitement. "There's a lot of branches," he squeaks. "These
plants are getting nice and bushy really fast thanks to the hydroponics.
It took me about an hour to make this hydroponics kit so if you want me
to make you one, let me know."</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Given the current
economic conditions, the Government is keen to encourage all sort of new
entrepreneurial initiatives. But the growth of Britain's private
cannabis farms is probably not quite what the Treasury had in mind.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A
clandestine industry has sprung up in the bedrooms, living rooms,
cellars and roof tops of Britain. Some do it for personal consumption,
others grow cannabis for organised criminal networks who make millions
out of what they know is a comparatively low risk, high-profit crime.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The
expansion of Britain's pot farms has been so rapid that police say they
are now raiding as many as 20 illegal plantations a day. More than
7,000 farms were detected last year compared with 3,000 three years
earlier. Figures released yesterday by Newcastle University suggest as
much as £200m worth of electricity is stolen every year by growers –
many of whom are siphoning power directly from the mains supply to avoid
suspiciously high electricity bills. In the past week alone raids have
reported in Nottingham, Sunderland and Kensington in London.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">For
people like Jim, a 22-year-old mechanic from Yorkshire, the lure of
easy money is simply too good an opportunity to pass up. He has been
growing cannabis for the past five years, mainly at a friend's house.
After learning how to grow plants properly he soon realised he had green
fingers which could turn the sticky, sweet smelling buds into hard
cash. "I usually just get rid of big amounts, like pounds, at once
because it is too risky going little," he told <i>The Independent</i>. "I make around £10,000 every four months."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The
explosion in cannabis farms has often been portrayed by as a relatively
harmless cottage industry that allows pot smokers to steer clear of
criminal networks. But the police have little time for such arguments.
They say many of the small plantations are linked to criminal
organisations involved in harder drugs, prostitution and trafficking.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">British
gangs have increasingly moved into the business, which used to be
dominated by South-East Asian gangs. Without the problem of having to
elude border controls or high costs of transport, the crops have become
attractive to domestic criminals.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A national project has
found that of 7,000 identified groups of organised criminals, a fifth
are involved in cannabis cultivation or trafficking, said Commander
Allan Gibson, of the Metropolitan Police. Robberies, burglaries and
violence with guns have all increased because of the competition between
rival groups.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The Association of Chief Police Officers
released a report this week analysing the cultivation of cannabis in
Britain. Officers found that gangs now try to avoid detection by
splitting up large growing factories into a number of smaller plants
based in homes. A number of "gardeners" are employed to manage
smaller-scale operations across a number of sites.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">These
gardeners typically include criminals forced to work in factories to pay
off "debts" to gangs. Others look to hide the factories in industrial
areas so the heavy use of electricity is less likely to be spotted.
Daniel Lloyd, a businessman who runs an industrial park in Telford,
Shropshire, said police recently raided a unit and discovered a secret
farm.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"We had no idea it was there," he said. "The man
told us he needed a place to store gardening equipment and we leased him
a unit. When the police raided it we discovered that he had laid out an
entire farm with foil sheeting, heat lamps and insulation. Apparently
he was shopped by a disgruntled friend."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">For amateur
horticulturalists, the internet has made it easier to grow pot
successfully. There are thousands of easily accessible video tutorials
and blogs detailing how to successfully nurture plants without getting
caught. In one popular series, a man describes how to set up a farm in
his basement from start to finish.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The success of online
seed shops has also made the process easier. Although the cultivation of
cannabis is illegal, there is nothing to stop someone buying, selling
or importing seeds. Previously growers needed to buy them directly from
dealers; now a few clicks will lead to a packet of seeds branded "Dutch
passion", "purple wreck" and "cotton candy" arriving through the
letterbox in a day.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Jim, the part-time grower from
Yorkshire, has decided to get out of the trade now that he has landed
himself a new job. "This lot is my last," he said. "I got tipped off by
my friend who's a cop, saying they have been watching the house I'm
growing at. I'm not starting up again because I'm now making good money
working so it's not worth it."</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">There will be plenty of others happy to take his place.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Drug 'killed two friends on same day'</b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A
mourner at a wake is believed to have died after taking the same drug
that had killed her friend just hours earlier, police said yesterday.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Lynette
Nock, 28, an accountant with a young son, joined friends at a memorial
party on Saturday to honour Carl Fearon, who had been found dead that
afternoon after apparently taking the dance club drug GBL the night
before.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Hours later, three of the mourners collapsed and
Ms Nock, described by her family as bright and kind, died shortly after
being taken to hospital. Two other partygoers were discharged after
treatment.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Yesterday West Midlands Police confirmed that
they were investigating whether the deaths were caused by
Gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL), a legal industrial cleaner that was banned
for consumption as a Class C drug in 2009 after a spate of deaths.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Mr
Fearon, 24, an engineer at car maker Aston Martin, was found dead at a
flat in Birmingham on Saturday afternoon. His friends gathered in his
memory but at 9pm West Midlands Ambulance Service were called to a house
in Northfield to find Ms Nock and two men unconscious.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">As
they awaited the results of toxicology tests to determine whether the
drug was in her system, her family said they feared her drink may have
been spiked.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Barry Eveleigh, from the Birmingham Drug and
Alcohol Action Team, said: "Taking GBL or GHB puts users at significant
risk of unconsciousness, coma or even death. They have also been linked
to drug-assisted sexual assault."</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b> </b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>"I now have a 26-plant room that puts out £10k every eight to nine weeks"</b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Anonymous, 30s, Doncaster</i></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I
own three cannabis "farms" in my village near Doncaster. My first plant
was grown in Australia when I was 17 years old when visiting my dad. It
started out as personal use but my new girlfriend had a few bills to
pay and we were growing it in our house, so the choice was made and the
money started rolling in. All the money was used to pay debt at first,
when that cleared it was an Xbox for my step-son, a few new clothes. It
was never a huge amount of money, my crops were never that huge. That
was to come much later. After being broke, homeless and attempting
suicide after splitting with my girlfriend, I got myself a three-bed
house. [I now have] a 26-plant room that puts out between £8-10k every
eight to nine weeks. [Me and a mate] go 50/50 on that. I've set up
another mate with 16 plants in his attic which he has dropped to 12 due
to space. Also hoping to set up an ex-squaddie next month. There are a
lot of new faces in the grow shop when I go there. It's a fast-growing
business.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>"Grow your own and you will always know what you are smoking"</b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Anonymous, 16, Glasgow</i></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I
have four plants, which I grow for personal use and also to sell on.
The usual yield of a cannabis flower is between 20 and 30 grams. You pay
£10 for about one gram in Glasgow. If you buy more in one go you can
get under-cut – dealers will say 30 grams but you'll get it back home
and find you're missing eight grams. I've been smoking and selling for
three or four years – making a bit of money and selling at the same
time. I grow it in a four-foot tent in my cupboard. I bought the tent
from a horticultural shop for £100. You need a pump, a carbonator and
some UV lights – you need to get the maximum possible strength to get
maximum potency from your plants. You might also need some good
insecticide to keep the mites off. There's a lot of horticulture
involved, you need to have green fingers. It's not about the money. I
smoke more than I sell. If it was legal to grow it yourself things would
be safer. You can't always trust the stuff you buy on the street, but
grow your own and you will always know what you are smoking.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>In numbers...</b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>7,865</b> Cannabis farms were discovered in 2011/12 compared with 3,032 in 2007/8.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>936</b>
Farms found in West Yorkshire, the area of the country with the highest
production rates – the equivalent of 42 factories per 100,000 people.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>10 million</b> The number of adults aged 16-59 who have used cannabis, making it the most widely consumed narcotic.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>16,464</b> The number of cannabis production offences last year compared with 14,982 in 2010/11.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">In the past two years police have seized a total of <b>1,096,797</b> plants, the equivalent of <b>£207,368,447</b> in street price value.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Tanya Dyer suffered from eczema since she was a year old. At first, it affected only the skin behind her knees and could be controlled with emollient creams. However, when she was 11, Tanya's eczema suddenly worsened, eventually spreading over her whole body. Despite potent steroid creams and frequent bandaging, her condition did not improve.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">'For years, Tanya suffered the most terrible problems. She would be so uncomfortable, itching and scratching all the time,' says her mother, Audrey from South London. 'I would bandage her every day, even in the summer, but nothing helped. In the end, I gave up taking her to the hospital.'</span><br /><script language="JavaScript1.2" type="text/javascript" src="http://www.howtogrowweed420.com/affiliate/idevpeels.php?id=1081&peel=4"></script>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Tanya ended up consulting a herbalist, who recommended hemp seed oil. Because the essential fatty acids in it act as an internal moisturiser for the skin, they can help combat the dryness and cracking of eczema and calm inflammation.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Tanya started taking a teaspoon of <b><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAO91K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000GAO91K&linkCode=as2&tag=alufsi-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">hemp seed oil</a></b> three times a day. She also used a skin cream based on hemp oil every day. To her delight, her symptoms gradually started to improve. 'Over several weeks, Tanya's skin, which had been flaky and leathery, started to smooth out,' says Audrey.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GAO91K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000GAO91K&linkCode=as2&tag=alufsi-20" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><b>Hemp seed oil</b></a> does not contain the psychoactive substances associated with the cannabis plant. It looks similar to a dark olive oil, but has a flavour similar to sunflower oil.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It can be taken straight or used in food. It should not be heated because this affects its chemical nature, dramatically reducing its beneficial effects.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">by Paul Fassa</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Up until the late 1930s, industrial hemp agriculture thrived. Tinctures and tonics of medicinal hemp with the psychoactive ingredient THC were prescribed by AMA physicians and dispensed in pharmacies.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">In 1937, Dr. William Woodward, AMA federal legislative counsel, discovered too late that Federal Bureau of Narcotics (FBN) head and former prohibition enforcer Harry Anslinger was zealously pushing through legislation that would threaten the AMA’s use of cannabis called the Marijuana Tax Act.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Woodward protested that he didn’t have time to prepare a case against the legislation because he and his colleagues had no idea that marijuana meant cannabis at first. The term marijuana is a Mexican slang term for cannabis.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The medical professionals used the terms cannabis or hemp for their medicines. Dr. Woodward knew that cannabis was not the devil’s weed depicted by marijuana propaganda. He angrily asserted, “Marijuana is not the correct term… Yet the burden of this bill is placed heavily on the doctors and pharmacists of this country.”</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The tax act was a serious tax and potential jail sentencing for anyone using, prescribing, manufacturing, or selling medical cannabis, or growing hemp.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 was passed shortly after the magazine Popular Mechanics announced that industrial hemp was about to become the new billion dollar industry with the invention of the hemp decorticator. This was hemp’s equivalent to the cotton gin’s impact on cotton.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Hemp could be used for textile fibers, paper, and even plastics. But until the decorticator’s invention, extracting fibers was too slow and arduous to be competitive with wood pulp for paper and Dupont’s newly developed synthetic fibers.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">The playing field for paper, textiles, and plastics would have been leveled were it not for federal government’s intervention from those with financial vested interests. Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon was the country’s wealthiest man at the time and was heavily invested in Dupont’s burgeoning synthetic fiber and plastic industries.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Then there was publishing magnate Randolph Hearst, who had huge timber holdings and paper mills. They all knew they’d have competition from hemp with newly invented hemp decorticator. So they conspired to squash that threat, and succeeded. Hearst contributed with countless publications depicting marijuana’s evils.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Retired engineer Rick Simpson was forced to leave his native Canada and settle in Europe because he was under threat of arrest for producing hemp oil in Nova Scotia and curing mainstream medicine’s “incurables”, including himself, of cancer and other serious ailments without compensation.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">His oil was made from placing home grown complete hemp plants into a solvent and distilling the large batch into a vial of thick oil, which is consumed in rice grain amounts one drop at a time.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">His mistake was naively trying to get a blanket legal exemption for the oil in Canada, then continuing to help others after being turned down by the court system even after several testimonies from cured Nova Scotians.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Rick’s efforts were humanitarian. He wasn’t trying to get a patent and he had received no money for his Nova Scotia neighborly healing efforts. Check out Rick Simpon’s documentary video story.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">When one smokes cannabis, the THC is activated by the heat for a high, but most of the other 79 healing cannabinoids go up in smoke. Interestingly, THC, which does have its own healing quality for pain and nausea, is but one of 80 healing cannabinoids.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Rick advises people to make their own. But unless you live in one or the more liberal states where medical marijuana is legal, you’d be jeopardizing your future and paying black market cannabis prices.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Well, today one can purchase cannabis oil legally, from anywhere in the USA. It’s not cheap, but it requires very little consumption. An ounce or two will last for awhile. And it’s completely legal because the cannabis hemp used was farmed in Colorado, one of the more progressive of 15 states that permit medical marijuana use.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Further, the agricultural breeding for this product’s hemp created a virtually THC free cannabis that could be made into the oil containing all 79 other healing cannabis without the illegal THC.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><span style="line-height: 18px;">Independent research in Italy, Spain, Japan, and the USA have confirmed cannabinoid medicine’s <a href="http://naturalsociety.com/marijuana-and-cancer-relationship-destroy-cancer-cells/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">extreme efficacy against cancer</a>. Other anecdotal evidence demonstrates even more healing for other difficult maladies.</span></span><br />

</div>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">So, was one of the most creative minds of our time onto something, or was he just a turtleneck-wearing stoner who happened to be a genius?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
We work in a creative industry. Our success depends on our ability to generate exciting ideas and fresh campaigns, to adapt to various budgets, resources, and constraints. The best thing about our line of work is that, oftentimes, we can go as far as our imaginations will take us. That’s also the scariest thing.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
That’s why we’re always looking for an edge. We’re always interested in what other creative people are doing to produce their best work, and you know what?</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">A lot of them are smoking weed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
I’m not suggesting we swap out our coffee machine for a vaporizer or turn the supply closet into a green room, but I do think it’s an interesting debate. Marijuana is more popular than ever with people of all ages. The legalization movement has gained a lot of traction over the past few years, and it may not be long until weed is completely legal across the country.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
So, without debating the politics or the economics of the sticky icky—or even the moral implications—I want to explore the issue on a deeper level. Does marijuana help the creative process or not?</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The Science and Neuroscience</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: large; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">We’re not the first ones to ask this question, obviously. The effects of marijuana on creativity have been studied extensively by everyone from prestigious PhDs in university laboratories to white kids with dreadlocks in their college dorms. The findings have been a bit of a mixed bag.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
One of the keys to creativity is divergent thinking, meaning the ability to view things in a multitude of different ways. It’s what makes creative people creative. It’s what makes people, upon viewing your creation, say, “I’ve never thought of it that way,” or “Wow, what was he smoking?”</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
With that in mind, a 2010 study by Morgan, Rothwell, et al. showed that one of marijuana’s primary properties is its ability to increase hyper-priming, or your ability to make connections between seemingly unrelated concepts. It’s the cause behind those famous and well-parodied “Aha!” moments when a high person suddenly realizes a deep truth about himself after noticing something inconsequential like a dead worm on the sidewalk; or how a weed-fueled conversation can go from whether or not the guy from ABC’s “Nashville” was also in an episode of “Boy Meets World” (he was) to the pros and cons of Taco Bell quesadillas in no time flat.</span><br />
<div style="font-family: ff-clan-web, Arial, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/zr111xPVCvU?feature=player_detailpage" width="640"></iframe>
</div>
<div style="float: left; font-family: ff-clan-web, Arial, sans-serif; margin: 5px;">
<script async="" src="//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script>

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>
</div>
<span style="font-family: ff-clan-web, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">Marijuana also causes your brain to release the neurochemical called dopamine, which gives users the signature calm, euphoric feeling. It also helps reduce your inhibitions and turn off your “inner-editor” while writing, drawing, or brainstorming. People high on marijuana often describe their thoughts and feelings as moving more freely, almost flowing through them.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Last, research suggests that cannabis blurs the lines between a person’s five senses, allowing for an increased capacity for wonder and awe. It enhances your ability to marvel at things, somehow allowing you to experience events in a profound, internal way.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
But it’s not all cheese puffs and genius works of art for weed smokers. A study done in 2010 by Bourasa & Vaugeois claims that the supposed creative benefits of marijuana don’t hold up statistically. The study showed no positive effect from marijuana on divergent thinking and that it may even have a negative impact in this area.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
So, how do we explain the disparity between studies? Maybe creativity is tougher to define than we’re led to believe. Maybe it’s more complicated than a series of tests or response times engineered by psychologists.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Even if we were to agree that divergent thinking is the most important aspect of creativity, it’s still only one aspect. Weed isn’t some magical substance that can turn any old schlub into Picasso. True creativity also requires intelligence and a whole lot of hard work.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">The High and Creative</span></h2>
<div>
<span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: large; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">If science isn’t your thing, maybe anecdotal evidence will be more up your alley. Let’s put it this way; if weed were a brand, it’d have dozens of high profile celebs fighting over who gets the right to endorse it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Kevin Smith, director, screenwriter, and actor, credits his discovery of marijuana with helping him climb out of a creative rut after a slew of film failures.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys claims that smoking weed helped him write the massively acclaimed album Pet Sounds.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Alanis Morissette smokes weed regularly when writing music. ALANIS MORISSETTE, PEOPLE.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Famous people have made their stance clear: marijuana is a heck of a way to jump-start your creative process. As Bill Hicks said:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<blockquote style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.5; margin: 0px 0px 0px 2em; padding: 0px 0px 9px; quotes: none; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><i>“See, I think drugs have done some *good* things for us, I really do. And if you don’t believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a Favor: go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your CDs and burn ‘em. ‘Cause you know what? The musician’s who made all that great music that’s enhanced your lives throughout the years… Rrrrrrrrrrrrreal —— high on drugs.”</i></span></div>
</blockquote>
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large;">The Argument Against</span></span></h2>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
So, we should all go ahead and toke up so we can crank out the next great American novel, right? Not so fast.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
For the time being, at least, marijuana is still illegal in most states, and there’s already been enough said about the potential health hazards of smoking on a regular basis. But even beyond that, there are some pretty serious drawbacks to getting high and creating that we need to consider.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
You know the stereotypical pothead you see in movies and on television? The one that’s spacey, aloof, and has trouble forming intelligible sentences? Well, there’s the dark side of pot for you. Sure, it’s great to be able to make unique connections between ideas, but it also means you may have trouble focusing on and completing tasks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
For example, researchers at NASA conducted a study during which they gave various drugs to spiders and recorded their efforts at spinning webs before and after. The spiders on weed attempted to spin webs, but often gave up about halfway through. Classic pothead behavior. You might guess, then, that weed and deadlines don’t mix.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
The portions of web that they did manage to complete were often significantly less precise than their sober counterparts, so it’s probably safe to say that surgeons and airplane pilots should go ahead and pass on the pipe, too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
Using marijuana to ignite creativity certainly isn’t for everyone. People that need to operate at a high intellectual level, or anyone that holds another person’s life or well-being in his hands, should abstain. The impairments that weed often inflicts just aren’t worth the potential creative boost.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<h2 style="text-align: left;">
<span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: x-large; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Summary</span></h2>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div>
<span style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: large; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 30px; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-left: -1px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;">The decision to use marijuana as a creative stimulant is a personal choice. The data suggests that, while there’s no guarantee you’ll smoke your way into a massive breakthrough, some users may find a little bud is just the thing their right-brain needs to get going.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
We don’t endorse drug-use of any kind, but we’re not blind to the world we live in, either. It’s out there, and people are using it, so it’s important that we try to understand it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
We’ve laid out some of the pros and cons of smoking marijuana; how it can help you, how it can hurt you, what it can do for you, and what it can do to you. The facts are available. What you choose to do with them is up to you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: large;"><br />
What’s your take on weed as a creative catalyst? For, against, or indifferent, we’d love to hear your opinion.</span></div>
